Song On Film

Art House Director‘ by Broken Social Scene. It’s supposed to be about Gus Van Sant.

Art house director, art house director
we lost magic light until tomorrow night
art house director, art house director
make the waters part into an empty heart

its been like a joke
every step of the way
is there something to coax
the truth of the day

defeat deflector defeat deflector
the rushes will not lie I swear this is your guy
& the starlet is a harlot she does not leave the trailer
she thinks that you’re a jailer
or someone that delayed her

chorus

I never meant for it to be that way
But since I have your attention
I’ll just give you what you want
And maybe I’ll be in your trailer

canyon connector purist protector
all the fun fell through we cant escape the gloom
and the starlet is a harlot she will not leave the trailer
she says that you betrayed her with a surfer from Australia.

chorus

Perfromed by STEREOLAB. Written by Tim Gane, Timothy John and Laetitia Sadier

All this violence is puzzling
Maybe the law should intervene?
All this violence is threatening
Hate is in need of censoring

Ban hate and violence
For our convenience

Don’t we all know the dangers
Of two conflicting viewpoints?
An active trouble may go
Fanning the flame of dissent
So much aggravation!
(Stop them, stop them! Ban them, ban them!)
To all haters: we’ll create some laws to stop you

You’re the danger, you really shouldn’t be allowed to
They piss on morality
They detest humanity
Those savages should be banned
They’re so deeply offensive
Somebody shut them up!

(Bull shit, bull shit! Damn it, damn it)
War can’t help it
They’ll still be full of hate and shit
But it’s handy

We’ll blame it on human nature
They piss on morality
they detest humanity
Those savages should be banned
They’re so deeply offensive
Somebody shut them up!

(Stop them, stop them! Ban them, ban them!)
We’ll censor the hell out of you
We’ll coerce evil out of you
We’ll cut your tongue if we have to

You’re the baddies and we hate you
We’ll censor the hell out of you
We’ll coerce evil out of you
We’ll cut your tongue if we have to
You’re the baddies and we hate you

This record still gives me chills. At the time, nobody used a Roland 808 and 909 like Kurtis Mantronik. I hadn’t heard an MC deliver the way Just Ice did on this and his staccato style was imitated by a slew of his rivals shortly after. I remember people not knowing where to nod and asking WTF was with those crazy drum rolls. Then, part 2 was even more sparse and off-beat with totally new verses added. “You can’t rap you lolli-pop liar!” Amazing to this day! Both tracks were years ahead of the curve.

Life In Transformation

Gary Gunn played ‘Serra Pelada’ by Philip Glass on his Songza Station MOVING PICTURES IN MY HEAD. That led me to the film POWAQQATSI – Life In Transformation (1988) by Godfrey Reggio. This is the second on a series with KOYAANISQATSI – Life Out Of Balance (1982) and NAQOYQATSI Life As War (2002). Words won’t do them justice.
